From the 31 March of 2006, Mont-Louis is part of the 14 major places more representative of the work of Vauban with:
Arras, Bazoches, Besançon, Blaye-Cussac Fort Médoc, Briançon, Camaret sur mer, Le Palais, Longwy, Mont-Dauphin, Neuf-Brisach-Breisach am Rhein, Saint Martin de Re, Saint Vaast La Hougue, Villefranche de Conflent.
The selection of these places has been made by experts such like Nicolas Faucherre, professor of history of the Art ( University of Nantes), archeologist and historian of the fortifications. Nicolas Faucherre has analyzed 151 places fortified by Vauban, from a scientific evaluation, in order to identify the series of candidates places to the UNESCO world-wide Patrimony, showing better the diversity of the projects and realizations of Vauban.
For Mont-Louis for exemple, it's the creation of the city about a ground clean of every construction( exnihilo) that it has motivated the insertion of the city in the project.
The technical constitution of the report of candidature has been entrusted to the AUDAB of Besançon, of which the goal is from accompanying the collectivity to its reflections on the subject of planning and of disposal of the territory.

Every year, the French State defends only one report aspirant to the label Unesco, chosen in an indicative list.
Today, our report about the places of Vauban is inscribed in this indicative list. In November 2006, the project of candidature will be deposited in the Ministries of the Culture. The Ministries will owe at first to validate the report, afterwards to gauge the date that the report will be subjected to by France to the Unesco. Then the report will be studied by experts of Unesco, a series of visits it will be organized on the places, as a result of which the label will be it can be freed to the set of the 14 places.
How to help Mont-Louis in the UNESCO project ?
Adhering to the Réseau des sites majeurs de Vauban: the quotation will be used for example for funding the concrete realization of the report, for funding the documents destined to making know the Réseau. In time which member of the association will be personally briefed of the continuation and of the evolution of the project.

The set of the 14 places are federated in an association: "Réseau des sites majeurs Vauban" created by Mr. Jean-Louis FOUSSERET, mayor of Besançon, on 30 March 2005 to the initiative of the City of Besançon and presided.
- The committees of support
The committee of national support has for president of honor Mr. Jean-Noël JEANNENEY, President of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and Mr. René RÉMOND, de l'Académie Française, it has for vocation to give a national and international resonance to the project.
Committees of support premises have been you create in each place. They have for goal to federate the local populations about the project and to pick up funds spilled in the "Reseau Vauban". Mont-Louis and Villefranche de Conflent will soon have a committee of common support.
- The association Vauban
The association Vauban is a member of honor of this project. It's devoted to the knowledge of the work of the most famous military engineer of its time and to the revalorization of the fortified patrimony until the works of the line Maginot. Having relation among all the local associations the same object and the fortified towns, the association Vauban organizes every year a colloquium in a different region, to make know the work of protection, of restoration and of revalorization carried out in the regions. He represents France to «the International Fortress Council», only European organization regrouping a dozen of associations to national vocation of protection, of conservation and of appraisal of the fortified patrimony. Every year to the anniversary date of the death of Vauban, the association Vauban organizes in the church of the "Dome des invalides", in presence of the military authorities, and of the representatives of the families that go down directly of Vauban, a ceremony at the foot of the monument that has been dedicated to him..
